Swing tags

Happy Easter Monday and hello April 2013 – oh how the the time is flying this year! It’s that time of the year when one feels they need to have a spring clean and de-clutter the sewing studio space. Whilst trying to do a tidy up, I found plenty of small pieces of wonderful African print fabric that I couldn’t quite bring myself to part with.

Handmade swing tags: With a bottle of glue in one hand, fabric pieces and luggage tags in the other hand, I created these new swing tags for my Etsy items. I think they look pretty interesting, and a nice new ending place for the small scraps of fabric :)

ShweShwe fabric currently in stock for custom designs

My boy has just returned from a trip to South Africa, and he bought me some more ShweShwe fabric. Isn’t he a good boy :)

This new ShweShwe fabric is slightly different to the fabric I bought in January … this new fabric has a double sided print. So cool, it means that the fabric can be used either side…. or both!

Custom orders are available: You can enquire about custom orders through Etsy conversation www.madebynomes.etsy.com

or contact me via naomi[at]madebynomes.com

Thanks, Nomes x

Shwe-shwe  fabric has a long standing history in South Africa. It was introduced to South Africa with German settlers in the 19th century, but over time Xhosa women, who took a liking to the stiff indigo-dyed fabric, replaced their animal skin clothes with Shwe Shwe. It is said to be named ShweShwe after the sound the skirts make when you walk.

Custom orders for skirts, accessories and home-wares can be made through www.MadeByNomes.Etsy.com

Recipes and cookbook

So here’s a post about a non-sewing topic. It’s all about cooking! I enjoy cooking and baking … and eating the home cooked goodies as well.

I have recently been spending time arranging some family favourite recipes into a recipe book. In order to make this something really special I have decided to also cook the recipes and photograph the finished product in the hope to create a book with delicious recipes and photos too.

African print goes tech – ipad covers

I think is was only a matter of time before I started using my African Print fabric to make covers for phones, iPads and accessories. I did some research on the internet to get some ideas for size, shape and closure styles. Liberty Blog has a simple tutorial for an unlined accessories cover – http://www.liberty.co.uk/blog/12177/sewing-project-liberty-print-ipad-case/

So here are a few pictures of my iPad cover.

African print cushion covers

I had some fabric left over from the lengths Dylan gave me to make his Party Pants…. so what better way to make use of the fabric than to construct some African print cushion covers for Dylan’s sister in South Africa.

These covers fit cushions of 60cm x 60cm, have 6 ties on the back to secure the covers – makes for interesting back design and also very functional. I think these look great – What do you think?
